Delayed Care, Diminished Independence

I waited well over twelve months just to be referred to a consultant for my eye operation.
During that time my vision was severely affected — everything was distorted and I couldn’t see properly. To make matters worse, my referral notes were lost between my GP and the hospital, which caused further delays. I was eventually offered surgery three months later.

The delays were largely due to cross-border issues, as my records from the Welsh Health Board were not accessible to the English hospital because of IT system problems.
The impact on my life has been significant. I had been working before my eyesight deteriorated, but I lost confidence as my vision worsened and eventually had to stop. For months I was unable to leave the house independently and became reliant on family and outside help for everyday tasks. This loss of independence has been extremely demoralising.
There have also been financial pressures. Being unable to work has affected our household income, and there have been additional costs for travel to appointments, as well as help and support when I could not manage on my own.
The long wait and administrative issues have had a serious impact not only on my health, but also on my work, finances and overall wellbeing.
